Mariah Carey Turns 44 Today

In case you didn’t know Mariah Carey’s birthday is today. The pop diva turned 44 years young today, and while we don’t know exactly what she’s doing to celebrate the occasion, we can take a guess that she’s doing something fabulous with “dem babies” and her husband Nick Cannon.

At only 44-years-old Mariah Carey has been able to accomplish a successful recording career, an acting career, and was even a momentary reality star as she reluctantly lent her advice on the judging panel of American Idol. Despite her Nicki Minaj feud, as far as exposure goes, it was a good move for Carey, who had faded in the background a bit.

As a recording artist Carey has broken numerous records. The recording artist has sold over 200 million records, which makes her one of the best-selling female artists of all time. On the Billboard charts, specifically the Hot 100 chart, Mariah Carey still holds the record for most weeks at number one. Her 1995 hit with Boyz II Men saw her crooning the track “One Sweet Day” which sparked something within radio listeners because she and the boys were at number one for sixteen consecutive weeks. The only artists to come close were Whitney Houston, Elton John, The Black Eyed Peas, and Mariah Carey herself as fourteen weeks.

Although The Beatles surpassed her record, at one point Mariah Carey was known to have the most number one singles. Still, her eighteen single tie with artist Elvis Presley is worth noting.

Besides her music career Mariah Carey has appeared in some award worthy films. Despite the Glitter snafu, Carey went on to act in Lee Daniels’ The Butler and Precious, the latter which earned the artist positive reviews.

As far as her regrets, although we doubt she’s thinking about them on her birthday, Carey revealed that Glitter was definitely up there. During a segment on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live! Carey admitted that after Glitter bombed it was a difficult time for her to bounce back from.

“It was called the “G” word, we couldn’t bring it up. In retrospect, I’m like, you know what, I learned something, and I’m grateful for that experience. But, it was a horrible couple of years, and then I had to get my momentum back for people to let it go.”

As far as looking forward to more good things from Carey’s forty-fourth year, the singer revealed recently that she’s coming out with a new album The Art of Letting Go on May 6.
