Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin Announce Split After 10 Years of Marriage

Celebrity couple Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have announced via Paltrow’s website Goop.com that the couple have agreed to separate after more than 10 years of marriage.

Paltrow’s site is currently inaccessible, presumably from high traffic as the news makes the rounds on the internet. However, E! Online has the entire message that was posted:

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.”

Paltrow and Martin, who is the lead singer for the world famous rock band Coldplay, were married in December 2003, after Paltrow became pregnant with their first child, Apple. Two years later, Gwyneth and Chris would welcome their second child, Moses. The two originally met while Coldplay was on tour in 2002 and Martin wrote a song to help Paltrow cope with the death of her father.

The couple signed the announcement with a gentle, “Love, Gwyneth & Chris” to their fans. The two have enjoyed a marriage that Paltrow called the same as any couple, with rocky times, but one that maintains a healthy friendship between them as well.

As far as celebrity couples go, Gwyneth and Chris had done their best to keep their marriage out of the spotlight, not wanting their famous pairing to interfere with either of their careers or affect their family life.

The split will undoubtedly fuel speculation about the cause of their separation. Last fall, Gwyneth was in the news after an attempt to prevent magazine Vanity Fair from running a piece on her that alleged she had an extra-marital affair with Miami millionaire Jeff Soffer, who is a friend of both Paltrow and Martin. The piece never ran, and Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter claimed that the piece had never been about the alleged affair, rather about the public’s love-hate relationship with Paltrow.
