Jennifer Lopez To Receive GLAAD Vanguard Award

Jennifer Lopez is one of many superstars being honored at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards set to take place next month.

According to E! News, Lopez will receive the Vanguard Award next month during the GLAAD Media Awards. The award is “presented to artists and media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.”

Jennifer Lopez is known for being an outspoken supporter of many things, including marriage equality. According to CBS News, Lopez is being given the Vanguard Award for her support of marriage equality.

“When it comes to gay marriage, I just believe in love,” Lopez told GLAAD. “I believe that when two people find each other and love each other, they should be able to spend their lives together with all the same benefits and privileges as everyone.”

One of Lopez’s recent accomplishes is her work on the hit ABC Family show The Fosters. According to Billboard, Lopez is going to be recognized for her work as one of the executive producers on The Fosters, which reportedly is a GLAAD Media Award-nominated drama series.

The Fosters is a show about a lesbian married couple who are working together to raise a mixed family. In the show the lead female couple is rasing a mixed family made up of biological, adopted and foster children. According to Billboard, Lopez’s inspiration for producing The Fosters came from her late aunt who had faced prejudice because of her sexual orientation. Because of her sexual orientation, Lopez’s aunt was reportedly unable to have her own family.

“Through her work to bring The Fosters to life and by consistently speaking out as a powerful ally, Jennifer Lopez has not only sent a message of acceptance to LGBT adults and young people, but inspired new support for our community among her many fans around the globe,” said GLAAD CEO and president Sarah Kate Ellis. “Family is about love, and that’s a message Jennifer has shared with millions through her groundbreaking work on The Fosters.”

Jennifer Lopez’s work on The Fosters should be recognized considering the success of the show. The show’s spring finale is set to air tonight, Monday, at 8:00 pm Central Time. From previews of the episode, it should prove to be just as emotional as the rest of the season has been.

According to E! News, past recipients of the GLAAD Vanguard Award include Josh Hutcherson, Janet Jackson, Drew Barrymoore, Antonio Banderas, Kristin Chenoweth, Whoopi Goldberg, Eric McCormack, Liza Minnelli, Sharon Stone and Elizabeth Taylor.

The GLAAD Media Award will be presenting Jennifer Lopez with the Vanguard Award on April 12, 2014 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
