Pub Posts Sign Calling Gun Owners ‘Losers’ And ‘Douchebags’
A South Carolina pub owner posted a sign calling gun owners with concealed carry permit “losers” and “douchebags.” The no concealed weapons allowed sign at the Backstreets Pub & Deli in Clemson has understandably infuriated Second Amendment supporters from around the country. Nationwide backlash against the pub was swift once images of the insulting sign were posted on the Twitchy website.
The Backstreets Pub & Deli sign said, “NO CONCEALED WEAPONS ALLOWED. If you are such a loser that you feel a need to carry a gun with you when you go out, I do not want your business. Douchebag.” According to a Washington Times report the South Carolina pub now has just a one star rating on Yelp due to negative reviews and comments by Second Amendment supporters.
The South Carolina pub owner who is identifying himself only as Pete, is already walking back the concealed carry losers and douchebags comment. He now claims that what he said “came out wrong” because he was “frustrated.” The Backstreets Pub and Deli owner also claims that the sign was meant to be temporary – as if the length of time the crude and disrespectful statement remained posted would mitigate the backlash. Pete said that he regrets using the rude language, perhaps the negative reviews and a drop off in business prompted the soul searching and apology.
The Backstreet Pub & Deli describes himself as a “conservative Democrat” and maintains that he has been a concealed carry holder since 2001, but does not think that firearms belong in a college town. Using Pete’s logic, folks who happen to live in a town which also boasts a university or community college should check their Second Amendment rights at the city limits and give up the ability to protect themselves in public. “There are cops everywhere. Cameras everywhere. Guns have no place here in a college town,” Pete added.
According to the most recent law enforcement statistics for Clemson (2012) crime is low in the South Carolina town, but it does exist. In 2012 there was one murder, four rapes, 34 assaults, 3 robberies, 86 burglaries, 343 thefts, 36 car thefts, and one case of arson reported. Even the most dedicated police force cannot be every place at once, as the murder victim’s loved ones would most likely agree. Cameras “everywhere” did not stop rapists from devastating the lives of four women.
Pete had to take the phone off the hook at Backstreet Pub & Del due to the massive number of people calling to complain and share their opinion about the concealed carry losers and douchebags sign.
