Gillian Anderson: David Duchovny And I Were Too Close To Date

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny had such realistic chemistry on The X-Files that many speculated the two were dating in real life, but Anderson now says the rumors about off-screen relationships were just that.

On the 20th anniversary of the premiere of their hit ’90s science fiction show, Anderson is doing the press circuit, including interviews and appearances at Comic Con in New York and San Francisco.

A possible relationship with Duchovny has been a popular question, and despite ongoing rumors for much of the last two decades, Gillian Anderson said nothing ever came to be.

“Now that it’s over, I can tell you: no,” she told The Huffington Post when asked about a possible relationship. Anderson added, “It’s a nice idea, but it’s not going to happen.”

Anderson explained that the actors were actually too close in the show’s production to ever consider dating.

“I think we know each other too well. I think we probably know each other better than we know our spouses at any time that we might have had spouses,” she said.

But she did admit that the chemistry fans saw on The X-Files was there in real life as well.

“There is an attraction,” she said. “There might even be more than an attraction, but it’s not going to happen. And it’s that frisson that has made it interesting in the series and continues to make it interesting.”

Duchovny has toed the same line. When rumors surface in 2012 that the two had begun dating, he steadfastly denied the reports.

When asked about the reports at the time, David’s rep says it was all “completely untrue.”

While she may be waxing nostalgic about The X-Files, Gillian Anderson has a new project in the NBC drama Crisis. She noted that the show reminds her quite a bit of her days as Dana Scully, however.

“I think that scene was actually probably the first scene we shot for the series, and (I was) surrounded by FBI agents wearing those jackets,” she on the Today show Friday morning. “At one point, I was like, ‘Wait! Hang on a second. I’m supposed to have one of those on, right?”

Only this time on Crisis, Gillian Anderson plays the sister of a special agent rather than the FBI member.
