Dallas Cowboys rumors are all focusing in on the atrocious defense that just got worse as defensive end Demarcus Ware was cut by the team and agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday. With very little salary cap space, the Dallas Cowboys will have a difficult time upgrading their roster, let alone their last ranked defense. There is one potential Dallas Cowboys rumor that could help, signing the Chicago Bears free agent Henry Melton.
If the Dallas Cowboys could sign Henry Melton, a defensive tackle, they would certainly bolster their inside play on defense. There is a serious obstacle with chasing after Melton however. The five year pro tore his ACL in just the third game for the Chicago Bears last season and health is certainly a factor for the 27 year old Melton. As Henry Melton begins to look at potential teams to sign with, there are strong indicators that the Dallas Cowboys rumors could come true.
Melton began to rise as a defensive star under current Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli when he was in Chicago. Recording 13 sacks in two seasons, Henry Melton made the pro bowl in 2012. Jason Hatcher is currently the best defensive tackle on the Cowboys roster, but he is rumored to be looking to sign somewhere else. Not to mention he is also 32 years old and probably nearing the end of his career.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of help available at the defensive end position for the Dallas Cowboys. Letting Demarcus Ware go was probably the right call, even if fans do not like it. Injuries and a drop in performance have made it unrealistic that Ware will return to his all pro form. The Dallas Cowboys have already signed one defensive tackle this offseason, Terrell McClain, who was not used much in the Houston Texans 3-4 scheme. While trying to build depth on the inside will help solidify the run defense, there are huge questions about the Cowboys pass rush.
Dallas Cowboys rumors about the draft are focused on defense as well. It is possible that they may be able to get their hands on Kony Ealy from Missouri. If Ealy is not available at number 16 when the Cowboys pick, it is doubtful there will be another defensive end worth taking. It is a slim market and for one of the better paid positions in the NFL, the Cowboys are not likely finding a better player than Demarcus Ware.
For all the Dallas Cowboys rumors out there the reality is this, they probably aren’t getting much better on defense next year, even with Henry Melton.
