Shailene Woodley Thinks ‘Twilight’ Promotes ‘Toxic’ Relationships

Shailene Woodley doesn’t think Twilight paints a very healthy portrait of teenage love.

The actress is preparing to enter the young adult market with the upcoming adaptation of the novel Divergent. Although it’s never really a good idea to throw stones at your cinematic brethren, Woodley couldn’t resist taking a few shots at the extremely popular series.

According to Hello! Daily News, Shailene hopes that teenagers aren’t pining for a romance like the one found in Twilight. In Woodley’s opinion, that relationship isn’t very healthy.

“‘Twilight,’ I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve,” she said.

Instead of wasting time watching movies that could potentially foster unhealthy relationships, Shailene Woodley wants people to start paying more attention to the environment. According to E! Online, the actress worries that folks simply don’t care what happens to the planet in the long run.

“My biggest fear is that people aren’t going to realize in time that we are nature, and that we need to think about that fact and respect that fact. People talk about global warming, the oceans, and the rainforest, and we need to be talking about it, but nothing’s going to change unless we change ourselves,” Woodley explained to The Daily Beast.

She added, “Nothing’s going to change in nature until we start with our own bodies, mental health, and happiness. The human race isn’t going to be so fine if we don’t take some necessary steps pronto.”

Shailene isn’t just dabbling in the world of YA sci-fi these days. The Secret Life of the American Teenager star also tackled one of the leads in upcoming drama The Fault in Our Stars. The movie is presently slated to arrive in theaters this summer.

Although she didn’t apparently have any issues accepting the role as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the adaptation of author John Green’s novel, Shailene was a little hesitant about jumping into Divergent. The Inquisitr previously reported that Woodley sought some advice from fellow actress Jennifer Lawrence.

“It was nice asking someone who has been through the process and is kind of seasoned in the young adult franchise. She gave me really beautiful advice and said that I should definitely take it. ‘It will be the best thing that ever happened. But don’t be an idiot, do a sex tape, [or] do drugs. And go to Whole Foods when your movie opens,” Shailene said.

Are you looking forward to Divergent? Do you agree with Shailene Woodley that Twilight could foster terrible relationships?
