Jennifer Beals To Return To Television, Lands Lead In TNT’s ‘Proof’

Jennifer Beals has lined up a return to television after she was cast in the pilot for the new supernatural medical drama, Proof.

The TNT programme is being produced by Kyra Sedgwick, and the Flashdance actress, who previously starred in The L Word, will play Dr. Kathryn Russo.

Russo has been described by Deadline as “a skeptical, hard-science, brilliant female surgeon with a caustic edge who has been struggling with the devastating loss of her teenage son and a growing estrangement from her surviving daughter.”

Because of her plight, Russo starts to believe that there is something after death, which leads her to investigate a variety of supernatural cases that revolve around reincarnation, out-of body experiences and hauntings.

Proof’s pilot episode has been written by Rob Bragin, who has previously worked on Greek, Murphy Brown and Miami Vice, and will be directed by Game Of Thrones’ Alex Graves.

Sedgwick, who as well as being married to Kevin Bacon is primarily known for her role on TNT’s The Closer, will executive produce alongside Bragin, Graves, Jill Littman, and Tom Jacobson.

50-year-old Beals has appeared in over 50 films, and her portrayal of Bette Porter on Showtime’s The L Word was widely praised and earned her an NAACP Image Award as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination.

Most recently, she has also been working on the web series, Lauren, which tackles subjects such as sexual abuse, and asks why certain cases go unreported or are unsettled. Lauren has so far run for 16 episodes over two seasons, and Beals has been praised for her repeated support of women’s rights and her strong feminist character.

Further TNT pilots that will be broadcast later this year around the same time of Proof include Guilt By Association, which will star Julia Stiles, and the Sharon Stone led Agent X.
