Beef Recall Spreads Across 35 States

A beef recall from earlier this year has reportedly spread across 35 states. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the recalled beef from a California meat producer may have reached 35 states and Guam.

An earlier report by The Inquisitr stated that Rancho Feeding Corp., of Petaluma, a Northern California firm, has voluntarily closed their doors, after 8.7 million pounds of beef were recalled. The initial recall took place on Saturday, February 8, 2014 and the USDA released a statement that stated the following:

“Rancho Feeding Corporation, a Petaluma, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 8,742,700 pounds, because it processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection. Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.”

According to CNN, thousands of retailers have been added to a list of companies that could have received beef products from Rancho Feeding Corp., since the February recall. “The retail list has been growing as more customers have been notified,” USDA spokesman Adam Tarr told CNN Friday. “The list could expand.”

After the February recall, Nestle USA reportedly issued a voluntary recall of some types of Hot Pockets after they determined that “a small quantity of meat from Rancho was used at Nestle’s Chatsworth, California, production operation.”

Reports state that as of February 14, 2014, the USDA had not received any reports of illness because of beef recall though they are classifying the recall as a “Class I recall,” which according to KDBC means that it is a “health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

According to CNN, the wide range of products that are subject to recall included “30-pound boxes of beef lips, mountain oysters and sweetbreads, as well as 40-pound boxes of veal bones and 60-pound boxes of veal trim.”

The Inquisitr stated that the recalled items were produced 1, 2013 through January 7, 2014. The USDA mark of inspection on them reportedly has “EST. 527” and their case code numbers end in 3 or 4 according to CNN.

Another report by The Inquisitr stated that the USDA continues to investigate where the tainted beef was distributed to. “Although Rancho Feeding Corporation provides beef to numerous sources, a large portion of their products are sold to wholesale outlets. The wholesale outlets then distribute the products elsewhere.”
