‘Lego Movie’ Loses Box Office Top Spot To Action Thriller ‘Non-Stop’

The Lego Movie’s three-week stranglehold on the box office has officially ended. The Liam Neeson action flick Non-Stop finished at the top of the weekend box office, leaving The Lego Movie picking up the pieces in third place.

The popular Lego Movie has enjoyed quite a run thus far, raking in an estimated $209.3 million domestically and $285.2 million globally. However, after three weeks of dominance at the box office, The Lego Movie brought in $21 million over the weekend, placing it behind Non-Stop and the somewhat surprising Son of God.

Of course, the animated Lego Movie is still striking a chord with audiences, as a $21 million haul is not bad for a fourth weekend. The Lego Movie features an impressive cast of vocal talent, including Chris Pratt, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, and ironically Liam Neeson, who is now No. 1 at the box office with Non-Stop.

The Lego Movie features Pratt as the protagonist Emmet, who is a normal construction worker suddenly thrust into a quest along with the Master Builders to defeat the evil Lord Business and save the Lego universe. The Lego Movie has proven to be both a commercial and critical success, so much so that Warner Bros. has already begun discussing a possible sequel, which is tentatively scheduled for a 2017 release date.

The Lego Movie could not stay on top indefinitely, and was taken down by Non-Stop, an action thriller starring Neeson as a federal air marshal placed in a rather difficult predicament. The film managed to pull in $30 million over the weekend, confirming yet again the box office draw of Neeson after his evolution into an action star.

Son of God came in a close second to Non-Stop, pulling in $26.5 million to finish ahead of The Lego Movie. The film chronicles the life and times of Jesus Christ, and the solid performance has surprised some industry insiders who have been unsure how the religious film would fare at the box office.

It has been observed by some that The Lego Movie has executed quite a feat in terms of marketing and branding. The film somehow manages to promote the toys and the corporate ideology while at the same time subverting these very principles. The Lego Movie pulls off the neat trick of delivering on expectations and confounding them all at once.

There is little reason to suspect The Lego Movie will slow down any time soon, despite its tumble from the top spot. Have you seen The Lego Movie, and if not, will you see it soon?
