Miss UMES Fired For Alleged Marijuana Possession And Disorderly Conduct

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is missing its campus queen – Miss UMES – who was ” dethroned” after being busted on a drugs possession charge.

Porsha Simone Harvey – the former Miss UMES – was also charged with disruptive behavior after a confrontation with a campus police officer.

Harvey, 21, from Newark, Del., resigned Wednesday from her role as Miss UMES, citing the recent events in her life which she explained to university officials devalued her role as a student leader.

This is the first time in the recent history of the University of Maryland that a campus queen has been deposed or has resigned voluntarily.

Harvey has refused to comment further on the circumstances which led to her resigning as Miss UMES, and her attorney,William Hall from Salisbury siad she would not discuss the case with any news organization.

In 2012 Porsha Harvey competed in the Miss Delaware competition which was could have led to her participating in the main Miss USA contest.

At that time NJ.com. described Harvey as an honor student who studied dance, acrobatics, piano and violin. It also mentioned that Harvey was a member of the Cathedral Choir of Delaware which had once sung at the White House.

Porsha received her “firing letter” from the UMES Office of Campus Life, a division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. The letter alleged that Harvey’s behaviors were “inconsistent with a UMES student and someone of your position.”

The Daily Times obtained a copy of the letter which instructed Harvey to relinquish her duties as Miss UMES. She was also told to return a crown, sashes and office keys associated with the title. The letter was from Qiana Drummond, interim director in the Office of Campus Life and stated (in part):

“You are hereby suspended and removed from your position and role as Miss University of Maryland Eastern Shore. With receipt of this letter, you are to immediately refrain from performing all duties and responsibilities related to the position of Miss UMES.”

Porsha Harvey was first charged by UMES police on February 15 with disorderly conduct and failing to obey an officer.

On February 18 she was arrested by Princess Anne police after they allegedly found her to be in possession of marijuana at the Maryland District Court.

Porsha Harvey was supposed to graduate in May of this year, It could be that losing the title of Miss UMES is the least of her worries.
