New ‘Matrix’ Trilogy Being Developed By Wachowskis

A new Matrix trilogy is currently being developed by the Wachowski siblings at Warner Bros.

According to Latino Review, the duo have already started the writing process for a new trio of films. The Wachowskis are believed to have written early treatments and outlines, which they have even handed into the studio. It’s not yet been announced if they will direct the films but they are expected to be given full control over their creation.

It’s even been speculated that Warner Bros. are aiming for a 2017 release, where they would go up against new Star Wars and Avatar efforts.

At the moment very little else is known about the potential new movies, but Latino Review did add, “One of the early outlines was about the birth of the Matrix.”

At the end of the original Matrix trilogy the Architect suggested that Keanu Reeves’ Neo wasn’t actually the first “One,” which of course leaves plenty of room for a prequel, or prequels, to explore different characters.

It’s been over 10 years since 2003’s Matrix Revolutions was released. This was the final part to the original science fiction franchise, and was preceded by The Matrix Reloaded, which was released six months prior, as well as 1999’s The Matrix.

The first film to the series was roundly praised, and it even went on to collect four Academy Awards. However its two follow-ups proved to be hugely divisive. Despite this, they all proved to be ridiculously successful at the box office, and from a combined budget of $363million they managed to amass over $1.6billion at the box office.

Since then the Wachowskis, who have worked alongside Warner Bros for several years, have struggled to repeat the financial success of The Matrix. Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas each managed to recoup only a paltry sum of their production costs, while Jupiter Ascending has hardly provoked a hysteric response too, ahead of its July 2014, release.

If the Wachowskis did return to the world of The Matrix then these films would almost certainly generate impressive box office totals that would put their recent cinematic missteps firmly in the shade.

Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving starred in the original films.

Of course, it’s no surprise that more Matrix movies are being considered as we currently live in a cinematic age where reboots, remakes, sequels and prequels are the norm. Over the next few years further Star Wars, Avatar, Avengers, Spider-Man, Batman and Superman films, plus many, many, many more, will hit the big screen.
