Los Angeles Clippers To Sign Danny Granger, Rumors Are True


The Los Angeles Clippers will sign Danny Granger on Friday evening, proving rumors over the last day to be true. The Danny Granger rumors about where he would go picked up significantly once his buyout with the Philadelphia 76ers was finalized on Wednesday.

According to Yahoo Sports, the Los Angeles Clippers were informed by Granger on Thursday night that he intended to sign with them as soon as he clears waivers at 5 pm Eastern time on Friday. The conversation took place between the former Indian Pacers All-Star and Doc Rivers over the phone on Thursday.

After shipping off Antawn Jamison and Byron Mullens before the NBA trade deadline, the Clippers were obviously looking to upgrade their roster through free agents. Los Angeles is hoping that Danny Granger will be part of a platooning small forward position. Jared Dudley has been disappointing at best this season after being signed to come in and bolster the Clippers’ shooting and defense. Matt Barnes and Hedo Turkoglu have both been filling in at the small forward position, but Granger would add a veteran with more potential.

Other Danny Granger rumors included the potential of going to the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. The Miami Heat were probably never a realistic destination, considering the history between Granger and the Heat. The Spurs and Gregg Popovich offered a realistic opportunity for Granger to come in and play a stretch shooter off of the bench. Reportedly, he decided to sign with the Clippers because they gave him the best chance to win now.

The Los Angeles Clippers currently lead the Pacific Division and would be the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoff seeding if it started today. For the Clippers to sign Granger gives them the shooter they have been looking for since last season. J.J. Redick has been an excellent addition, but injuries have slowed him at times.

Before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers at the trade deadline, Granger was averaging 8.3 points per game. His shooting percentages have been well below his career standards, which has some concerned that his knee injury may have put the brakes on his career. In Los Angeles, he will not be expected to carry to heavy of a load, which will help. The Clippers are still Chris Paul and Blake Griffin’s team.

With Caron Butler signing with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Granger with the Clippers, other bought out free agents like Jimmer Fredette are looking to land soon as well. Candace Buckner of the Indianapolis Star confirmed the rumors that the Los Angeles Clippers would sign Danny Granger.
