Turner Sells Sports Streaming Company

Turner Sports has sold its online sports streaming company, PlayON Sports, to Atlanta-based 2080 Media.

PlayON Sports offers Internet streaming solutions primarily to college and high school sports teams, allowing them to broadcast their games and other programming over the Web. The company claims the ACC and the United Soccer League among its past clients.

The new owner, 2080 Media, isn’t completely unfamiliar terrain for PlayON. Its CEO is a former Turner Broadcasting exec, David Rudolph. Rudolph will personally be responsible for the network’s day-to-day operations and has indicated he intends to keep it running under the same name and with the same general goal. Oddly, however, PlayON’s Web site is currently offline as of the time of this posting.

The cost of the acquisition was not disclosed; however, 2080 Media raised $3 million in funding earlier this week. The company had indicated that cash would be used to help fund the PlayON purchase.
