United Airlines: Computer Outage Resolved, Operations Resuming

Throughout the country Friday night, United Airlines passengers were stranded due to an hours-long computer outage.

As of 3:35 AM EST Friday, the airline announced in the above tweet that flight status and rebooking were restored on the airline’s website- but that didn’t prevent travelers across the country from getting stranded. USA Today spoke to some frustrated passengers in airports across the country about the effects of the outage:

At United’s terminal at San Francisco Airport, well over 1,000 people were standing around as lines slowly began to move.

Ed Costa, 62, was headed home to New York City. He said he’s diabetic and had been in line almost seven hours.

“Why don’t they have the backup for the system?” he asked.

United Airlines took to Twitter after ten PM Friday to inform customers of the outage, but no details about cause of service disruption were given. The company has not yet explained what precipitated the massive computer meltdown.
