Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ Still Going Strong On Hot 100 Despite Beatles Backlash

It’s been a weird week for Katy Perry. After the Beatles tribute aired on Sunday, which saw the singer performing the hit “Yesterday,” fans of the Beatles weren’t too happy that such a coveted song went to a pop artist. As we previously reported, Perry’s cover set the internet ablaze with hate.

Many opinions about Katy Perry’s performance popped up and reasons were given for the hatred her performance received. Top on that list was Perry’s gender-fixing of the song. While there have been many covers of “Yesterday” in the past, we can’t think of any versions of the iconic song where the lyrics were changed to suit one’s gender. The two specific lines referred to are: “Why he had to go; I don’t know he wouldn’t say.” The second is, “I’m not half the girl I used to be”.

Despite the fact that Katy Perry was torn a part for her Beatles performance, she still remains the one to beat on the Billboard charts. Although many were thinking that Pharrell’s “Happy” was going to top the Billboard charts, Perry’s “Dark Horse” has proved that it isn’t so dark after all, and stayed at No. 1 for the third week in a row. Pharrell’s “Happy” climbed from No. 8 to No. 2. This makes Perry’s ninth single in her career.

Although not a lot of people were fans of Perry’s performance over the weekend, another performance of hers might have carried her into this week. Perry’s “Dark Horse” was performed at the Grammys and according to Billboard that might have carried over some major buzz.

Another positive thing Katy Perry has to look forward to is her chances at The Brit Awards. If she takes home the top award of the night, it will only be a high in an already really strong year for the singer. According to Mirror, Perry has a really great shot at winning the Best International Female award.

In addition to gearing up for the Brit Awards show, and scoring a number one again for “Dark Horse”, Perry took a second out of her day to post a small tribute to the late actress Shirley Temple, who was an entertainer as a child. As we reported Temple passed away at the age of eighty five years old of natural causes.

Perry took to Twitter for her own personal tribute to the legendary actress:

“You were the original cherry on top, Shirley Temple! Rest In Peace!”
