Julia Roberts Half-Sister Dies From Drug Overdose, Was It Suicide?

Julia Robert’s half-sister was found dead in a bathtub at a Los Angeles residence on Sunday.

Nancy Motes, 37, is believed to have died from a drug overdose, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office statement on Monday. (Reported by Reuters.)

L.A. County Coroner spokesman Captain John Kades said that prescription drugs had been found at the residence, which was not actually Motes’s home.

Kades added that his office was not ruling out the possibility that the overdose could have been accidental. However, there are indications that it may have been a suicidal overdose since they had discovered indications of a suicide note at the residence.

Motes’ autopsy was scheduled for Monday, but the actual cause of death may take as long as 8 to 10 weeks to be determined, pending a toxicology report.

Motes is the half sister of Oscar-winner Julia Roberts and her brother, Eric Roberts, who is also an actor.

Julia Roberts, 46, has been nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in “August: Osage County.” She did not appear at the Oscar nominees luncheon hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Monday.

Representatives for both Julia Roberts and Eric Roberts have yet to respond to Reuters request for a comment.

However, in a statement to People magazine, the Roberts family said they were “shocked and devastated” by Motes’s death.

“It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes… confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose,” the family said.

Julia Roberts has another sister, Lisa Roberts Gillan who is also an actress, and the aunt of another actress, Emma Roberts.

Julia Roberts is one of the highest-paid actresses in the world. In 2003, she was paid an unprecedented $25 million for her role in Mona Lisa Smile. Her net worth is estimated to be in excess of $140 million.
