Salma Hayek Returns To Her Action Movie Roots In ‘Everly’

Salma Hayek is returning to her roots in action movies, and audiences in the United States will now get the chance to see it.

Dimension and Radius-TWC picked up the rights to the Joe Lynch-directed project Everly, which is currently in the post-production phase. The release is set for sometime later in 2014.

The movie centers on a down-on-her-luck woman played by Salma Hayek who is forced to do battle with a team of assassins sent by her ex, a vindictive mob boss. Along the way the woman must also save her estranged mother and daughter.

Everly, which was produced and financed by the new Singapore venture Vega, Baby! also stars Togo Igawa, Masashi Fujimoto, and Hiroyuki Watanabe.

After picking up the movie, Radius execs had high praise for Salma Hayek and her performance.

“We’ve been on the hunt for a female driven action franchise and we’ve finally found it in Everly. Salma is utterly transcendent,” said a statement from Radius co-presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego.

Producers Adam Ripp and Rob Paris added: “We’re thrilled to be in business with Dimension and Radius. Bob, Tom and Jason have been passionately tracking the project for some time so we couldn’t be happier to have them as partners.”

The movie has some strong backing besides the work of Salma Hayek. It was written by Yale Hannon, who has an extensive resume in television that includes work on Parenthood, Big Love, In Treatment, Nurses, Vanished, and Strong Medicine.

Director Joe Lynch made his feature film debut in 2007 with Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, and followed it up with two more in Chillerama(2011) and Knights of Badassdom (2012).

Though she was worked mostly in comedies lately — including an appearance in Grownups 2 this summer and an extended stint on 30 Rock — Salma Hayek has strong roots in action movies. She has appeared in a number in the action genre, including Desperado (1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), and Once Upon A Time In Mexico (2003).
