San Francisco Pedestrian Killed, Driver Arrested

A San Francisco collision has left one man dead, and reports state that a 71-year-old woman was arrested. The victim of the deadly collision has been identified as 78-year-old Isaak Berenzon.

In an earlier report by The Inquisitr, police Officer Albie Esparza told reporters that the man, now identified as Berenzon, had been walking east across Sunset Boulevard near Yorba Street when he was hit by a southbound Toyota Corolla. The man was said to have gone through the windshield and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have now identified the driver of the Corolla as 71-year-old Jenny Ching, and according to the The San Francisco Examiner, she had been cited on on suspicion of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The incident happened around 11 am Tuesday morning. Ching and two female passengers were all in the car at the time of the accident. All three were reportedly taken to a local hospital for the treatment of injuries that were said to be not life-threatening. Berenzon’s body had gone through the windshield and was reportedly left there, covered by a yellow tarp, until a medical examiner arrived on scene to examine it.

According to KTVU, police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said that Ching was cited at the hospital and was then released. Police Chief Greg Suhr called the accident a “horrible collision” and asked all residents and visitors to be more careful when driving, biking and walking around the city.

“Everybody needs to slow down, chill, take an extra second to get where you’re going and pay attention,” Suhr said.

Residents in the area say that this particular area is especially dangerous for pedestrians. Dick Morton and his daughter Ailin live near the intersection and Dick told reporters that the area is dangerous because “people can pick up quite a bit of speed.”

“This is a terrible place to cross,” said Elyse Aylward, who lives two blocks away. “I’m surprised that when they put in the pedestrian lights they didn’t just put in a signal. People fly along here. The speed limit is 35, but people are usually doing closer to 50. There have been many, many accidents here.”

According to The San Francisco Examiner, Suhr said they have been stepping up enforcement following a recent spate of pedestrian deaths in San Francisco. In 2013 there were 21 pedestrian deaths making it the highest number of pedestrian deaths in the city since 2007.
