‘Destiny’ Release Date Plagued By PETA Requirement: No Animal Mounts

The Destiny release date is set and confirmed to be September 9 of this year, but one part of the game won’t make it. Thanks to PETA, Destiny won’t have animal mounts.

Yes, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals would likely raise an issue if Bungie didn’t make a change to the game so that you can’t ride animals in their Destiny game. Apparently the armor that the Titan characters wear in the game would be “too heavy” for the animals’ backs. It’s a good thing they weren’t around when Luke Skywalker rode a Tauntaun across Hoth in full cold weather gear in Star Wars, or when Han Solo cut one open to keep him warm.

Apparently even simulated animals are under PETA‘s protection. Oddly it never stopped Pokemon from allowing players to capture monsters in Pokeballs, and Assassin’s Creed 4 still allows you to skin an animal while it’s under the influence of a sleep dart.

A Bungie spokesperson explained the lack of animal mounts on the Destiny release date:

“We considered animal mounts, but the weight-load of the Titan’s heavy armor kept breaking their backs, and we knew that PETA would go absolutely berserk.”

As an alternative to animal mounts, Bungie is giving players the same options they had in Halo, offering a variety of vehicles to ride into battle on, or simply traverse the world.

A downside to having no animal mounts in Destiny is that the gamer might not feel any emotional connection to a vehicle, and it will likely be abandoned as the game goes on. It happens all the time in open world settings such as in Grand Theft Auto 5, Saints Row 4, and Dead Island. There will always be another vehicle waiting somewhere for the taking, but animal mounts might actually make the player take care of them.

Do you think Bungie was wrong to take animal mounts out? Will you still buy the game on the September 2014 Destiny release date?
