Hong Kong Tycoon Cecil Chao Takes $120 Million Marriage Bounty Off The Table

Hong Kong tycoon Cecil Chao has apparently learned his lesson.

Days after Gigi Chao issued an open letter to her father in response to the $120 million he offered to any man who could marry his daughter, the businessman decided to take the deal off the table. However, Cecil remains hopeful that Gigi will change her mind down the road.

“She is only 33. Life changes. I mean I changed a lot when I was 33 to now. I don’t have to accept her partner, it’s for her to accept her partner,” the Hong Kong tycoon explained to CNN. Cecil Chao added that he won’t accept Gigi’s partner Sean as a member of his family.

Although he’s still unwilling to accept his daughter’s sexuality, the businessman seems to understand that paying someone to turn his daughter straight isn’t the best idea.

“If this is what she wants to be for the time being, it’s all over. I’m not trying to use money to buy her happiness, she has to choose her own happiness, but I can use my money to let her have a choice,” he recently explained.

This isn’t the first time the wealthy Hong Kong tycoon extended a financial offer to would-be suitors. The Inquisitr reported back in 2012 that Cecil Chao was willing to fork over $60 million to any man who could win his daughter’s hand in marriage. Approximately 200,000 desperate guys crawled out of the woodwork to propose marriage to Gigi.

Since she was unwilling to budge on the matter, Cecil Chao decided to raise the stakes. He doubled the price of the dowry in hopes that a good man would emerge to sweep his daughter off her feet. While she appreciated his concern, Gigi said in an open letter that she remains dedicated to her lesbian partner.

Chao’s daughter said in the open letter:

“My regret is that you have no idea how happy I am with my life, and there are aspects of my life that you don’t share. I suppose we don’t need each other’s approval for our romantic relationships, and I am sure your relationships are really fantastic too… I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out who I am, what is important in my life, who I love and how best to live life, as an expression of all these questions. I am proud of my life, and I would not choose to live it any other way.”

For the moment, it seems that Hong Kong businessman Cecil Chao is willing to live with his daughter’s sexuality. Unfortunately, he isn’t willing to accept her partner just yet. Are you surprised that he took the $120 million marriage bounty off the table?
