‘Avengers 2’ Cast Addition: South Korean Actress Kim Soo Hyun To Play Minor Role

A new Avengers 2 cast addition has been confirmed, though the role is only a minor one.

After some speculation which involved Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo allegedly denying that any filming was taking place in South Korea, it has been confirmed by Seoul officials that it will indeed take place. South Korea has been unofficially added to the list of locales being used in the upcoming Marvel cinematic universe phase two collaboration.

PSY might be able to clue you in on what part of Seoul it’s being filmed in (hint: “Gangnam Style”).

It has also been reported that producers have been scouting a castle in Italy which could be the setting for Hydra headquarters in Avengers 2, an update from what we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger.

The latest Avenger 2 cast addition has been revealed as South Korean actress Kim Soo Hyun, and even though she plays a background role and allegedly only has one line, it could be possible that she becomes more prominent in future Marvel films. Her history is not well known outside South Korean TV shows like Brain, Queen of the Game, and 7th Grade Civil Servant, so this could be her launching point in American cinema.

It appears that Kim Soo Hyun will initially be a doctor working with Tony Stark, though Marvel has yet to confirm exactly what her role is. Fans have taken what they have been given about the actress’ role among the Avengers 2 cast and decided she may be instrumental in helping Tony Stark build Ultron. The guilt surrounding such an action could drive her to turn against Stark and make her a minor villain, as one source has indicated.

A Korean website has already confirmed the actress, saying:

“Kim Soo Hyun did make it into ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘ … But we cannot confirm anything until there is the official announcement. Kim Soo Hyun is to star as a partner of Iron Man Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., as a doctor. Kim Soo Hyun has a lot of major scenes in the movie.”

While it’s quite a stretch, the existence of Quicksilver in the film has proven that X-Men characters can indeed be part of it, as long as they’re not called mutants. Oddly, most of the oriental female characters in the Marvel universe come from the Wolverine or X-Men storyline. With Wolverine having been an Avenger at one point in the comics, we might see Kim Soo Hyun cast in yet another controversial role.

Japanese superhero Sunfire was a man in the comics (and an Avenger), but that might not stop the character from being recast as a woman in the movies with a new origin involving Ultron.

Joss Whedon has said before that he wishes there were more women in superhero movies, so we may just see a little gender swapping. Of course with Disney in control, it probably won’t involve her being a transsexual. It’s more likely that either Sunfire is a woman, a Wolverine character will be added, or Kim Soo Hyun’s role is something completely different and more innocent.

What do you think Kim Soo Hyun might become as the latest alleged Avengers 2 cast addition?
