Mary J. Blige: Father's Alleged Attacker Arraigned, Bond Set At $500K

The woman police believe stabbed singer Mary J. Blige's father was recently arraigned on charges of attempted murder in Battle Creek, Michigan.

According to authorities, Cheryl White allegedly stabbed Thomas Blige in the neck Thursday during a domestic dispute outside of his apartment complex. Although Blige survived the attack, he remains in critical condition at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. A judge set White's bond at $500,000 on Friday.

Reports indicate that Mary J. Blige's father got into an argument with White while she was deflating his tires near his apartment at Arbors of Battle Creek on Thursday. When paramedics arrived on the scene, they discovered Thomas Blige on the floor of his apartment. He reportedly received injuries to his neck and arms during the altercation.

Police explained that Cheryl White was later placed under arrest and charged with attempted murder. Defense attorney Jeff Schroder said White, who was in a relationship with Blige for five years, was simply trying to defend herself when the stabbing occurred.

According to the Battle Creek Enquirer, Mary J. Blige's father returned to his apartment after White allegedly stabbed him in the driveway of the complex. Although he was reportedly conscious when paramedics arrived at the scene, reports suggest that he died twice while receiving treatment for his injuries.

This isn't the first time that Thomas Blige and Cheryl White have gotten into a physical confrontation. Police said that officers responded to seven different domestic dispute calls since last August. White, who also resides at Arbors of Battle Creek, was reportedly arrested at her residence while wearing a blood-spattered shirt.

Attorney Jeff Schroder wouldn't comment on the specifics of the situation, though he said that Cheryl White was definitely having difficulty processing the situation.

"She is very thankful for the support she has from her church and the community. She would ask the community to keep her in their prayers. I am looking at a not guilty," he explained.

While several reports suggest that Thomas Blige is still receiving treatment at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, officials wouldn't confirm that he's a patient at the facility. Mary J. Blige has yet to officially comment on the matter as of this writing.

The woman accused of stabbing Mary J. Blige's father is due back in court on February 7.
