Roxana Rodriguez, a 31-year-old nun, originally from El Salvador, shockingly gave birth to a baby boy in Italy.
Sister Rodriguez, a resident at a convent In the town of Rieti, said that she had been suffering from abdominal pains when she was rushed to a local hospital, adding that she assumed they were just "stomach cramps."
The mayor of Rieti, Simone Petrangi, appealed to local residents to offer support to the nun who had given birth, but to respect her right to privacy. Some kind local residents got together and sent baby clothes and cash to the hospital where Roxana Rodriguez was recovering from the birth and from shock.
She wasn't the only one who was shocked, as the world media grabbed the story and publicized it. Rodriguez decided that it was probably a good move, seeing as she'll be spending many hours in confession, to name the baby boy after the current Pope, and called him Francis.
After giving birth, when Sister Rodriguez was asked by her fellow nuns what had happened, she simply responded: "I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain."
But not everyone was so cynical about the 'immaculate conception', A local pastor, Don Fabrizio Borrelio, said that in his opinion Roxana Rodriguez was telling the truth and it shouldn't be assumed that she knew she was pregnant.
Going off on a tangent - but only a slight one - a British Medical Journal recently published a study which alleged that one in 200 American woman say they gave birth without having had intercourse beforehand.
It goes without saying that only time will tell what happened to Sister Rodriguez, and if the father of the baby will come forward and do the right thing.
