88-Year-Old Man Shoots Wife Inside Las Vegas Hospital

An 88-year-old man is accused of shooting his wife inside a Las Vegas, Nevada, hospital. William Dresser reportedly walked into his wife’s room at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center and shot her in the chest. Authorities said the wound is life-threatening and Dresser is charged with attempted murder.

The woman was originally in the hospital’s third floor rehabilitation unit recovering from a previous injury. Authorities said they have no reason to suspect Dresser was responsible for his wife’s original injury.

Dresser has no prior criminal history and authorities said he shot his wife with small caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was recently purchase. Authorities said he opened fire at around 11:30 on Sunday. Although the suspect surrendered, the hospital remained on lockdown for several hours. In an official statement, a hospital spokesperson said the shooting was “a targeted situation.

The suspect has not discussed a motive for the attack. However, authorities said he has no prior criminal history that would indicate violent tendencies. As reported by ABC News, Dresser is currently on suicide watch at the Carson City Jail. His bail was set at $225,000.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the 88-year-old man surrendered without incident and nobody else was injured in the shooting. His wife was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center, Reno, for further treatment. Although her current condition is unknown, authorities said the injury was critical.

Last month, Renown Regional Medical Center was the site of another hospital shooting. On December 17, 2013, Alan Frazier, age 51, shot and killed a doctor before turning the gun on himself. Another doctor, who was also shot, survived the attack.

CBS News reports Frazier allowed several patients to leave the area before shooting the two doctors. He explained his motive in a suicide note. Authorities said Frazier was upset about a vasectomy, which was performed by the hospital’s urology clinic. Although the procedure was completed in 2010, Frazier said the procedure “ruined his life” as he was in constant pain.

Frazier’s friends and family said he often complained about complication he experienced following the routine surgery. However, they did not think he was capable of murder. Authorities said he may have suffered from mental illness as he was diagnosed with depression and taking medication. His former fiance said he often experienced severe mood swings if he forgot to take his medication.

The 88-year-old who shot his wife in the Las Vegas hospital has not revealed a motive. However, authorities are concerned that he will attempt to take his own life.
