Oscar Music Snubs Go To Taylor Swift, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’, And Lana Del Rey

The Oscars gave a few surprise snubs to each category during its nominations, but no one felt the sting of rejection more than the Best Original song category. The nominations for Best Original Song were a bit puzzling for anyone who was following the awards season closely.

While the Academy made sure to nominate fan favorite Frozen for the song “Let it Go,” they failed to nominate season favorites like Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey.

Instead of focusing on clear favorites of the season, the Academy went a little left field and nominated Pharrell Williams for his song “Happy” in Despicable Me 2, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Frozen’s “Let it Go,” Paul Hewson, Dave Evans, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen for “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and Karen O and Spike Jonze for “The Moon Song, which was featured in the film Her.

In addition to Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey’s household names being left out for a royal Oscar snub, other big names such as Coldplay and Inside Llewyn Davis‘ Justin Timberlake, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver failed to get a nomination for Best Original Song for their song “Please Mr. Kennedy”. The latter was expected due to the fact that it was built on a pre-existing song, which made Please Mr. Kennedy and the Inside Llewyn Davis boys ineligible for a nomination.

Aside from the Oscar music snubs, it looks like the race for Best Original Song comes down to two guesses. One being the crowd favorite of “Let It Go” which was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for the Disney film Frozen. The other song that’s in competition for the Academy Award is “Ordinary Love” from the Nelson Mandela film, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, which could earn Bono the award. If we are going just by sales, we’re leaning more in the direction of Frozen as the soundtrack has been slowly climbing the Billboard charts.

That said, we can still have a deserving upset and see the award go to Spike Jonze for “The Moon Song” for Her. One thing we won’t see is Taylor Swift’s overly enthusiastic theatrical performance upon going up to receive her award. Chances are Swift will still be at the awards ceremony, if not at the actual show, then backstage at a party.

If you were wondering who took the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, that honor went to Bono from U2 for his touching song “Ordinary Love.”
