Tamron Hall: ‘Today’ Show Fill-In Could Be Moved Up To Full-Time Anchor

Tamron Hall could be the newest addition to the anchor desk at the Today show, with the 43-year-old reportedly in talks with NBC about a permanent position on the show.

Hall has been a regular fill-in on the morning show, and now is reportedly being courted to become a co-host on the third hour of Today. The third hour has a more informal format, looking more like a talk show than the harder news angle of the first two hours.

Hall has been appearing mostly on the news desk at the Today show or on a new segment devoted to trends in social media and special events like the Golden Globes. If she joins Today as an anchor, Tamron Hall would be joining Natalie Morales, Al Roker, and Willie Geist during the hour known as Today’s Take.

The shakeup could be related to slipping ratings at the Today show. After Ann Curry’s departure, the show has fallen to No. 2 behind Good Morning America. Geist was added in 2012 and in September the show added Carson Daly as another co-host.

“When you are No. 1, it’s easy to stop taking chances,” noted NBC Universal News Group chair Patricia Fili-Krushel about the network’s aversion to risk-taking. “I think we just stopped innovating.”

Hall has been busy at NBC outside of the Today show. She also hosts NewsNation weekdays on MSNBC and Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall on Investigation Discovery.

Hall joined NBC in 2007, but is seen as a hot commodity in the television industry. She has reportedly been approached by at least one of NBC’s competitors about a job in the news division.

Talks between Tamron Hall and the Today show are reportedly ongoing. NBC did not comment on the reports.
