Mary Kay Letourneau, Disgraced Former Teacher, Jailed For Missing Court Date

Mary Kay Letourneau, the infamous former teacher who was sexually-involved with a 12-year-old student, was arrested Monday morning in King County, Washington.

Letourneau was booked at 4:44 a.m. on January 6 for failure to appear stemming from a charge of driving with a suspended license, her third offense, according to King County's records. Mary Kay was released at 1:05 p.m. on $5,000 bond. CNN reports Letourneau is expected to appear in court Tuesday.

It was 1997 when Mary Kay Letourneau shocked the world with the scandal of her ongoing sexual relationship with her student, Vili Fualaau, that had begun when he was only 12-years-old. That May, Letourneau gave birth to Audrey Fualaau, a child resulting from the crime.

Tru TV reminds us that Mary Kay's lawyer managed a plea deal that would largely keep her out of prison; if she plead guilty to child rape and promised to take her medication for at least six months and serve three months in jail, Letourneau, pregnant with Fualaau's child, would be released on probation. As part of the deal, after being released from the three months in jail, Letourneau would participate in a treatment program for sex offenders.

One of the conditions Judge Linda Lau set in accepting the plea deal was that Mary Kay surrender custody of her daughter to Fualaau's mother. The other was that Letourneau could never again contact Vili Fualaau.

Mary Kay Letourneau was released in January, 1998, after spending 3 months behind bars, On February 3, she was arrested once more after Seattle police officers found her and Fualaau having sex in the back of a car. Mary Kay, pregnant once more, then received the full sentence she had coming when Judge Lau vacated the plea agreement and sentenced Letourneau to seven and a half years in prison.

Upon release, Mary Kay Letourneau registered as a Level 2 sex offender with King County. Hours before, Fualaau entered a motion to lift the no-contact provision. The two were married in 2005 and have capitalized on the attention surrounding their relationship, hosting "Hot For Teacher" night at a Seattle-area club and publishing a book about their affair.
