In a vlog titled “My New Year’s Resolution,” Melvin revealed that he is bisexual.
“My New Year’s resolution is to fully, utterly, and wholeheartedly be myself from this day forward and I can’t seem to achieve this resolution without unmasking myself,” Tre Melvin said through his YouTube page, ThisIsACommentary. “I am a bisexual.”
The 21-year-old Melvin has gained fame for his page as well as his work outside of YouTube. He is a published playwright and actor, as well as a philanthropist, raising money on his site for a scholarship fund.
But it his YouTube videos that have gained Tre Melvin the most fame. He touches on a number of topics with his sketch comedy and parody videos.
Melvin premiered his first video, titled “N****s These Days,” on his Facebook profile on October 9, 2011, and pushed it to YouTube later that day. Within one week he already had more than 1,000 subscribers, and by the end of the month had more than 100,000 video views.
Within two years, Tre Melvin reached more than 1.5 million subscribers and and more than 100 million video views.
Melvin said he hoped his coming out wouldn’t matter one way or the other, but acknowledged that it would be taken that way.
“I’d like to start out by saying this shouldn’t feel like life or death, this shouldn’t be a big f***ing deal, but unfortunately society makes it a big f***ing deal,” he said.
That was certainly true judging the by response of his YouTube comments. Some took it upon themselves to condemn Trey and his lifestyle.
One user wrote: “Being Gay is a mental disconnect, just like rapists, cleptos, serial killers, skitso. sorry but society wants us to be gay they are subliminally planting it with allowing same sex marriage, promoting men such as rappers to wear feminine clothing, commercial say stop saying that’s so gay, and having famous ppl come out the closet.”
But the response for Trey Melvin and his coming out as bisexual was largely positive, with fans telling him they support him and look forward to more funny videos.
