Ted Cruz To Renounce His Canadian Citizenship [Video]

Texas Senator Ted Cruz has decided that he is an American once and for all. Senator Cruz has asked his legal team to begin the process of officially renouncing his Canadian citizenship this week. Cruz is hoping to complete the procedure by the end of 2014.

Ted Cruz released his birth certificate after questions were raised by liberal groups that he may not be a naturalized US citizen. According to the Constitution of the United States, only a naturalized citizen may run for President of the United States. The Dallas Morning News pointed out that Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. He was born to an American mother, but under Canadian law he is a dual citizen of both countries.

Ted Cruz said to the Morning News:

“I have retained counsel that is preparing the paperwork to renounce the citizenship”.

Further, Senator Cruz’s office released an official statement about his Canadian citizenship saying:

“Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship. Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American”.

Ted Cruz was first elected to the Senate last fall where he quickly made a name for himself as a Tea Party favorite. He is largely seen as being responsible for the government shut down this past fall. Regardless of his limited time in the Senate, Ted Cruz has fueled massive speculation that he is preparing to run for the Republican nomination for President on 2016. He has traveled frequently to early voting States and also has met with many of the GOP’s major fundraisers.

Ted Cruz was quick to deny that his renunciation of his Canadian citizenship had anything to do with a potential presidential run:

“My political perspective is focused on representing the state of Texas”.

Do you think that Senator Ted Cruz is going to run for President in 2016?
