Greg Lupfer Suspended: CSU Football Coach Calls Opposing Quarterback Homophobic Slur

Greg Lupfer has been suspended after television cameras caught the Colorado State University football coach mouthing a homophobic slur at the opposing quarterback during the New Mexico Bowl.

Lupfer, the defensive line coach, has been placed on suspension by the university and will go through mandatory anger management and diversity training, CSU athletic director Jack Graham ordered after the incident.

ESPN cameras caught Lupfer mouthing the words “f**k you, you f***ing f****t” to Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday after Halliday threw a touchdown pass in Saturday’s game.

After the game, Halliday told reporters that Lupfer “grabbed me and said some profane things to me.” A replay did not show any contact between the men, but did show Halliday approach Lupfer after it appeared the coach said something to him. A second coach steps between them after the homophobic slur, and points at Halliday to leave the sidelines.

Afterwards, Greg Lupfer took responsibility for his actions.

“I accept these consequences — two weeks without pay and the training programs — and I am thankful for this second chance to continue coaching at Colorado State and be a part of the Ram Family,” Lupfer said in a statement released by CSU. “I am deeply sorry for my behavior, which does not represent who I am or my values. I embrace the opportunity to participate in anger management and diversity sensitivity training. I was angry and careless with my words, and my words hurt many people. I sincerely apologize to the GLBTQ community for causing pain by using a slur without considering its meaning. I take ownership of my words and fully understand why people are very upset.”

The school said that Greg Lupfer will be placed on zero-tolerance status after his gay slur toward Connor Halliday.
