Demi Lovato Used To Smuggle Her Drugs On Airplanes

Demi Lovato was once so addicted to cocaine that she smuggled her drugs on airplanes.

The former Sonny with a Chance star doesn’t have any problems discussing her past substance abuse with anyone who’s willing to listen. Since the singer feels that her struggle to stay clean could help someone out in the world who’s going through the same thing, Lovato often speaks candidly about her struggles.

The revelation about her cocaine habit arrived courtesy of an interview with Access Hollywood. Demi Lovato said that she was so addicted to the drug that she risked serious legal trouble by smuggling it on airplanes. She would reportedly use the drug when everyone else slept on the plane.

“I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine, and I would bring it on airplanes. I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep, and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom, and I’d do it,” Lovato explained during the recent interview.

She added, “That’s how difficult it got, and that was even with somebody [with me]. I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me [and] I was able to hide it from them as well.”

Demi Lovato explained that she discovered she’d hit rock bottom after getting sick in a car on the way to the airport. The singer was downing vodka she’d poured inside a Sprite bottle at the time. She added that she realized her problem had swelled to outrageous proportions when she was left to battle these problems on her own.

“I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, ‘Oh my God… that is alcoholic behavior. [It’s] no longer, I’m young and rebellious and out having fun, it was, wow, I’m one of those people… I gotta get my s*** together,” Lovato said.

The Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year author also told Access Hollywood that a big reason she decided to get clean and sober was so she could still see her sister, actress Madison de la Garza. Demi Lovato explained the last time she had an intervention:

“It was my management, my entire team, manager, lawyers, everyone, and my parents coming into a room saying if you don’t get sober — my mom specifically said, ‘You know, we’re going to move back to Texas and you’re not going to be able to be around your little sister.'”
