United Football League holds player draft

So the United Football League took another step towards filling out its five teams 2011 roster on Monday as they conducted a player draft. This was not the big time TV event like the NFL draft, but one mainly conducted and communicated to the UFL fans out there through social media. The Five UFL coaches revealed their draft picks via twitter and Facebook accounts, and now we have a pretty good idea of what each UFL team is going to look like this season.

The Hartford Colonials had the first pick and selected QB Jerrod Johnson of Texas A&M. Johnson had a very productive Junior season with teh Aggies, but some shoulder surgery concerns and questions about his footwork left him undrafted in the NFL Draft. He may get a shot at starting in the UFL as we do not yet know if Luke McCown will return to this league.

Other QB’s taken in this daft was Mike Teal out of Rutgers who was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2009 NFL draft. He was selected by the Las Vegas Locos and will get a chance to battle Chase Clement for the starting spot. The Omaha Nighthawks selected Jeremiah Masoli to come in and push DJ Shockley for the starting gig. Masoli has had a few character issues and needs a second chance.

Overall the UFL draft is full of a lot of names most pro football fans may know, but it looks like the five UFL coaches are giving chances to some kids who fell short in the NFL draft for whatever reason. I think that is the true value of this league, and the way it should fill its roster spots in the future.
