Taye Diggs And Idina Menzel Separate After 10 Years Of Marriage

Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel have separated after 10 years of marriage.

“Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time,” reps for the couple told People Wednesday. “Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time.”

Diggs and Menzel met as co-stars in the original Broadway production of Rent in 1996. Mentzel received a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical but lost to Ann Duquesnay for Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. She later won a Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in Wicked.

Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, both 42, married on January 11, 2003 and welcomed their son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, in September 2009. In an interview with People in April, Menzel talked about the difficulty of balancing motherhood and her career. At the time, the Queens native was workshopping the musical If/Then in New York while her son stayed home in Los Angeles.

“It’s hard trying to make the decision to keep him in L.A. so he can go to school with his friends. He would be with a babysitter or have to travel to me to New York where I am rehearsing all day — but at least he’s with Mommy,” Menzel said. “It’s those kind of decisions that torture me all the time.”

Menzel also said that her marriage to Diggs wasn’t perfect, but they work at it like other couples.

“I’m not going to glamorize it or glorify it — we go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much,” she said. “We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time and we try to find new ways to communicate.”
