Leighton Meester Hits The Broadway Stage In ‘Of Mice And Men’

Actress Leighton Meester will make her Broadway debut in 2014 with Of Mice and Men.

According to TIME Magazine, Meester joins James Franco as part of the cast for the adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel by the same name. Of Mice and Men tells the tale of struggling migrant workers George Milton and Lennie Small in the Great Depression. The pair find jobs on a ranch often visited by the boss’s flirtatious wife. The boss, Curley, is short in stature and temper; Meester plays the role of Curley’s Wife—Steinbeck purposely gave her no other name in the novella—who causes trouble for Lennie, George and all the other workers. With her former role on Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester is no doubt up to the task.

The revival of Of Mice and Men, which TIME reports has not been seen on Broadway in 40 years, will be the Broadway debut for Leighton Meester, Franco and co-star Chris O’Dowd, the latter of whom will give life to George and Lennie, respectively. For Franco, it won’t be his first encounter with Depression-era classics, having written and directed an adaptation of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and doing the same for Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, as well.

Franco, O’Dowd, Leighton Meester and the rest of the cast hit the stage beginning in March at the Longacre Theatre, according to E! Online. One thing Meester and Franco won’t be doing together is the Veronica Mars movie. While James is rumored to be appearing as himself in a cameo, Leighton’s character Carrie Bishop has been recast due to scheduling conflicts.

Meester’s most recent headlines came from the news of her engagement to Adam Brody of The O.C. Leighton had previously been linked to former Gossip Girl co-star Sebastian Stan (of Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Aaron Himelstein. Adam and Leighton met on the set of The Oranges and the two stars began dating earlier in 2013.
