Kanye West Talks New Album, Only Eight Songs

Although rapper Kanye West is definitely a crowd-pleaser, the beauty of it all is that he never really aims to be. The Yeezus rapper has quite the reputation of saying and doing as he pleases in typical ‘Kanye West’ fashion, which is why the brief details of his new album aren’t too astonishing.

For any other rapper, certain details would appear to be odd. However, for West, it’s relatively normal. His creative decisions usually lead toward vibrant ideas that impact the urban community, cultivating new trends, fashion and idealistic sound. West’s creative synopsis for his next album appears to be quite illuminating.

Earlier this week, West attended the Art Basel modern and contemporary works exhibition in Miami Beach, FL. Business Insider reports that West offered his perspective and views of art and design where it relates to his own musicianship.

The “Guilt Trap” rapper outlined the artistic influence of Swiss architect Le Corbusier for his “Yeezus” project. West also stated some of the similarities and comparisons between his musical showmanship and that of performance artist Marina Abramovic.

The discussion took place on Wednesday night at the Moore Building in Miami’s Design District as West shifted the gears toward his angle for composing his next album.

West spoke with architect Jacques Herzog giving his a brief synopsis of his new artistic direction toward the greater world of art. West also shared how art has served as a major contributor to the evolution of his music career.

“My original creative background was fine art,” West said. “By the time I was 14, I was in national competitions for art, and I actually went to school for art. Sometimes I actually forget that. Except for when I tour and I look back at the stage and say, ‘Wait a second, I forgot this was the whole trick I pulled on everyone to make them think I was a rapper, a musician or celebrity when the entire time it’s all been a giant art project.'” West then shifted gears toward the preliminary plans for his next album.

“I think my next album is going to be eight songs,” West said during the chat with Herzog. “It’s just reducing down the amount of information that you need. People say a design is the point where you can’t take anything else away. Yeezus was very, very designed. I took a departure from radio and popular music in order to get this seat here. If I hadn’t made Yeezus, I wouldn’t be sitting here with this cool font at Basel right here.”

While no definitive release date has been set for the new project, West has started the creative process to get things moving. “I haven’t named my next album, but I have started on it,” he told Power 99 according to NME. “I always write down philosophies all the time, so I’ll just have some thoughts and every time I think of it I write, and I’m just collecting beats, I’m just constantly working. I’d like to put out more product, I’d like have another album out by next summer.”

With Kanye West’s level of diligence and determination, fans can almost be sure that his next album will definitely drop next summer.
