‘Gravity’ Star Sandra Bullock: The Film Brought Her Back To Hollywood A-List

Gravity star Sandra Bullock is once again an A-list Hollywood draw, and it’s that film which brought her back.

Sandra Bullock hasn’t been this desirable as an actress since her big break in the Keanu Reeves film Speed. Admittedly, the best male actor in that film was actually Dennis Hopper as the bomber who basically turned a bus into a rolling death trap. Keanu Reeves was never known for his acting ability.

What you might not know is that Gravity was originally meant to star Angelina Jolie, an actress who has rarely made a forgettable film. From Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (one of the best video game based movies ever made) to Gone in 60 Seconds, Angelina Jolie has been a powerhouse actress who never seems to lose her touch.

Gravity star Sandra Bullock had a lot more to prove before making her comeback alongside George Clooney, who likewise has seen his share of lows. She has gone years starring in romantic comedies such as Miss Congeniality and The Proposal. Altogether, her roles in the past decade have not been nice as Hollywood has largely placed her in “typical” female roles, not that she minds.

The Blind Side may have been her highest grossing film of late, but Gravity seems to be launching Sandra Bullock back to the spotlight. Such reward did not come without sacrifice, of course, because she had to have her son on the set to keep her relatively sane.

The shocking part of her success with the film was that George Clooney was being used at the forefront of the promotional materials, even though his role was mostly supportive. Even more surprising was the fact that George Clooney actually has one of the worst movies ever made under his belt (Batman and Robin).

Similarly thanks to The Heat, in a role played opposite Melissa McCarthy, Sandra Bullock has seen a rather good year. Charles Gant, a notable film news editor, has said that Gravity was a well-timed success for the actress:

“She’s always been a gifted comic actor. [Her] status in Hollywood has been linked to that fact. Women actors only have a limited amount of genres in which they can be authentic stars – in drama and comedy, yes, but not so much action or sci-fi – and her big successes have tended to be in rom-coms. Gravity couldn’t have come along at a better time.”

Gravity star Sandra Bullock is back on top due to the success of her new sci-fi disaster film.
