Annette Bening, Warren Beatty, And Transgender Son Ira, Are All Political Activists Now [Video]

Stephen Ira Beatty, the transgender son of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, has appeared in a PSA video opposing a New York State Medicaid regulation that excludes transgender people from having access to healthcare.

Ira, 21, says in the video:

I grew up outside of New York, but I’ve always known I’ve wanted to move here for the city’s vibrant artistic community. As a trans person, I would hope that I’d be welcomed but many trans people aren’t because we don’t have the basic healthcare coverage we need to survive.

The Video was produced by GLAAD and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, with fellow trans activists, medical providers and a mother of a transgender woman. Until May of this year. the acronym GLAAD stood for “Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.”

They announced then that the advocacy organization was altering its name and broadening its mission to focus more on advocating for equality for transgender people.

Ronica Mukerjee, a family nurse practitioner says. “Trans medicine is a medically necessary intervention. Many people believe that providing hormones for trans patients is cosmetic but as a medical provider I can tell you how crucial it is for trans people to have knowledgeable trans-friendly providers.”

Neither Annette Bening nor Warren Beatty have publicly commented on Ira’s gender identity. He is the eldest of their four children, and was born as “Kathlyn Beatty.”

In March last year, Ira appeared in a video for the WeHappyTrans Project in which he called himself, “a trans man, a faggy queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut.”

He revealed that he “came out” to Bening and Beatty as transgender when he was 14 years old.
