‘Anchorman’ Spin-Off In The Works At Paramount

An Anchorman spin-off is reportedly in the works at Paramount Pictures.

Since the studio stands to make a considerable amount of money from director Adam McKay’s Anchorman 2 next month, executives are seriously considering a spin-off featuring Ron Burgundy’s dog Baxter and his son Walter. Worst Previews explains that the project is reportedly spearheaded by McKay.

“We wanted to do the adventures of his son, Walter Burgundy, and Baxter. And I actually pitched it to Adam Goodman at Paramount and he said, ‘That’s not a bad idea.’ So there’s a chance we might be doing a G-rated, PG, ‘Adventures of Walter and Baxter,’ which would be amazing,” McKay explained to Collider.

Of course, nothing about the Anchorman spin-off is currently set in stone. The studio is no doubt waiting to see just how well Anchorman 2 performs at the box office when it finally hits theaters on December 20. However, it’s doubtful Paramount should waste any time worrying about business.

If a sequel and a spin-off isn’t enough to satisfy your cravings for Ron Burgundy-related adventures, then you’ll be happy to know that Adam McKay is possibly working on an alternative version of Anchorman 2. The proposed cut would reportedly feature completely different jokes than those found in the theatrical release.

Adam McKay recently told Empire magazine:

“We did so much improv on this one that we can literally replace every single joke in the movie and put in alt scenes and alt improv runs. I think the editor’s working on it right now, with 250 new jokes. I think it would be really funny to put it in theaters for midnight showings. I know that I personally, if I loved a movie and someone told me that, like if ‘Airplane!’ had been released with all-new jokes, I’d be like, ‘you’ve got to be f***ing kidding me!’ I’d see it in a second.”

Before fans can enjoy an Anchorman spin-off, they’ll have to spend their hard-earned money on the sequel this December. The film continues the adventures which began in Will Ferrell and Adam McKay 2004 comedy. However, our heroes face an all new set of challenges as they head into the 80s.

Here’s the official synopsis for the sequel:

“With the 70?s behind him, San Diego’s top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), returns to the news desk in ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.’ Also back for more are Ron’s co-anchor and wife, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), weather man Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), man on the street Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner) — All of whom won’t make it easy to stay classy… while taking the nation’s first 24-hour news channel by storm.”
