Drunk Without Alcohol? New Pill Eliminates The Need For Booze

Do you want to get drunk without alcohol? A new pill in development allows people to experience the joys of intoxication without the need to consume copious amounts of booze.

British neuroscientist David Nutt explained that the drug in question would allow people to get drunk without the health risks or hangovers. Although he believes that the pill could help fight alcoholism, the Epoch Times reports that Nutt can’t get funding for his project.

“We know that the main target for alcohol in the brain is the neurotransmitter system gamma aminobutyric acid (Gaba), which keeps the brain calm,” the scientist wrote in a recent Guardian article.

He added, “Alcohol therefore relaxes users through mimicking and increasing the Gaba function. But we also know that there are a range of Gaba subsystems that can be targeted by selective drugs. So in theory we can make an alcohol surrogate that makes people feel relaxed and sociable and remove the unwanted effects, such as aggression and addictiveness.”

The neuroscientist explained that he recently got drunk without alcohol on the pill. After spending an hour feeling inebriated and sleepy, Nutt took an antidote and was able to give a lecture without any side effects.

“I’ve done the prototype experiments myself. I’ve been inebriated and then it’s been reversed by the antagonist. That’s what really gave us the idea. There’s no question that you can produce a whole range of effects like alcohol by manipulating the brain,” he recently explained to the folks at the Daily Telegraph.

Although getting drunk without alcohol is apparently as easy as popping a pill, Alcohol Concern’s Emily Robinson believes the drug could be abused just as easily as booze if it ends up in the wrong hands. Instead of giving alcoholics an easy fix, she believes government officials should address addiction as a whole.

“We would urge caution on this. We agree that alcohol is a serious burden to the country. But we would urge the Government to invest in policies that we know work, such as minimum unit pricing and advertising restrictions,” Robinson explained.

Despite concerns, the New York Daily News reports that Nutt is still seeking funding for his project. He believes people could benefit greatly from his pill getting you drunk without having a sip of alcohol.

“I think this would be a serious revolution in health… just like the e-cigarette is going to revolutionize the smoking of tobacco I find it weird that we haven’t been speaking about this before, as it’s such a target for health improvement,” Nutt explained.

What do you think about people getting drunk without alcohol? Would you take a pill to get intoxicated if it were available on the market?
