Miley Cyrus Smokes Joint At MTV EMAs

Miley Cyrus smoked a joint on stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday in what could be considered an unabashed bid for attention. If that’s what Miley was going for, she certainly got it.

The 20-year-old singer won best video award for her hit song “Wrecking Ball” and opened the space-themed show with a rendition of “We Can’t Stop,” while wearing a silver spandex suit.

Cyrus’ decision to smoke a joint on stage wasn’t illegal, considering the MTV EMAs were held in the Netherlands, where smokers can’t be prosecuted for possession of small amounts of marijuana, though the drug isn’t legal, notes USA Today.

Miley long ago shed her image of innocence as Hannah Montana and made no secret of her appreciation for Amsterdam’s attractions, including the city’s Greenhouse coffee shop, where marijuana is apparently on the menu. Cyrus also showed her support for pot by wearing leaf emblems in her earphones during the “Wrecking Ball” performance.

The singer’s dance partner from the MTV VMAs earlier this summer was noticeably absent for Sunday’s performance, though Robin Thicke did perform later on. Instead, Miley Cyrus twerked on her fellow dancers, including a much smaller female dance partner who smacked the singer’s butt at one point.

Cyrus wasn’t the only US artist to win an award at the MTV EMAs. The New York Daily News notes that Katy Perry spit out a sip of champagne when she was announced as the winner for Best Female Artist. The singer took the stage to take her fans and later performed a rendition of “Unconditional” while suspended from wires.

Eminem, who just released his first album in years, performed “Rap God” during the show. The rapper won in the Best Hip Hop and Global Icon categories. While the EMAs focus on global music acts, the winners showed there is a lot of overlap.
