‘Thor: The Dark World’ Snags $31.6 Million From Moviegoers On Friday

Thor: The Dark World hammered the competition at the box office on Friday.

Director Alan Taylor’s $200 million sequel is tracking a little better than what some analysts predicted ahead of the flick’s released on November 8. According to estimates, Thor 2 amassed a very healthy $31.6 million from moviegoers on Friday. Needless to say, Taylor’s outing is leaving the original flick in the cinematic dust.

According to The Wrap, this could push the film’s domestic total to an impressive $85 million this weekend. Unfortunately for the folks at Marvel and Disney, Thor: The Dark World probably won’t dethrone Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 as November’s highest-grossing flick.

The Inquisitr previously reported that the Marvel flick could amass $300 million globally by the time the weekend wraps up. Since the movie is tracking much better than expected in the US, Thor shouldn’t have any trouble blasting through this barrier by Sunday.

Thor: The Dark World is all set to make a killing at the box office this weekend, but what about the rest of the cinematic offerings currently in theaters? Judging from the early numbers, Bad Grandpa, Last Vegas, and Free Birds will likely generated $11 million from moviegoers over the next three days.

Unfortunately for Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate, director Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game isn’t fairing too well with moviegoers. Forbes reports that the sci-fi flick only managed to bring home roughly $2.9 million on Friday.

Considering Ender’s Game cost upwards of $110 million to create, producers are no doubt hoping for a little help from the foreign box office. Sadly, things aren’t looking too swift overseas at the moment. Box Office Mojo claims the flick has only made $9 million abroad as of November 8. With all the new movies currently headed to theaters, it’s highly unlike that this number will get any better as the month wears on.

Speaking of which, Disney and Marvel better make their money from Thor: The Dark World while they can. Although they’ve got the box office locked down this weekend possibly next, they’ll have to contend with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on November 22.

Director Frances Lawrence’s follow-up to the box office hit is presently predicted to bring in roughly $185 million on opening weekend. This could make it the highest-grossing November release in history. Considering the buzz that’s currently surrounding the follow-up, chances are it won’t have any trouble shattering that record.
