Lady Gaga: I’d Always Hoped To ‘P*** Off’ Madonna

Lady Gaga seems pretty pleased that she managed to “p*** off” Madonna.

The Material Girl was reportedly none too pleased with Gaga’s tune “Born This Way,” a song that allegedly borrowed heavily from “Express Yourself.” Madonna reportedly covered the tune during some of her recent concerts, much to the surprise of the “Applause” singer.

During her recent interview with Attitude magazine, Lady Gaga said she was “completely kind of floored” that Madonna was covering “Born This Way” during her shows.

Lady Gaga explained:

“The fact that I was on her mind at all. I mean, Madonna’s… she’s Madonna. I looked up to her for a long time. I’m not quite sure what her intention was -– to do that in the show, but I don’t really care. I think playing into the gossip of the tabloids and, I guess the fodder of the competition, that’s just not what I’m about.”

She continued:

“She chooses to use her voice the way she chooses to use hers and I choose to use mine the way I use mine. All it meant to me was that Madonna Ciccone was singing my song on her stage and I’m 27! And as a punk-rocker from New York, I’ve basically been hoping that I would become so good that one day I would p*** off Madonna!”

Madonna originally addressed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” during an interview with 20/20 back in 2012. When asked what the “Like a Prayer” singer thought about the tune, she didn’t seem too impressed with the effort.

Madonna explained:

“It sounds very familiar. It feels reductive. (When I first heard it) I thought, ‘What a wonderful way to redo my song.’ I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting. I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done. It’s a statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it… There’s a lot of ways to look at it. I can’t really be annoyed by it because, obviously, I’ve influenced her.”

The Material Girl also told her fans last year that Lady Gaga turned down the chance to work with her. However, Madonna didn’t seem too bothered by the rejection.

“I invited her onstage to sing with me. But, she turned me down. It’s okay. I’ve been rejected before. It builds a little character. I have the best fans in the whole world,” she said.
