Nintendo: Wii 2 won’t be 3D

Nintendo just brought out a games handheld with 3D visuals, so Wii 2 will boast 3D graphics, right? Nope! In a CNN interview, Nintendo of America bossman Reggie Fils-Aime (above) has more or less ruled out 3D for whatever follows the Wii:

“Glasses-free is a big deal. We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3D, likely, that won’t be it.”

As the company currently sells a home console that won’t output HD (not a criticism), that is perhaps unsurprising. And, while the PS3 boasts 3D in some of its titles, Nintendo has shown it’s not typically a company that follows competitors. The sticking point for Ninty seems to be making people look like jerks in those disgusting 3D goggles. As 3DS creator Hideki Konno added:

“I think at Nintendo, we realise that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work. In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D.”

So there you go. You owe your dignity to Nintendo.
