Infant Aria Schilling To Receive Life Saving Heart Surgery After Insurance Initially Denied Her

Aria Schilling made news in the beginning of October as the infant who was denied life saving heart surgery by her insurance provider. Good news has finally found its way to the Schilling family as they announce that little Aria will get the surgery that she needs.

According to ABC News, 14-month-old Aria was born not only with a hole in her heart but also a deformed valve. Aria was scheduled to have open-heart surgery on October 11 at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland but the family’s insurance provider, Western Health Advantage, denied coverage for the surgery since the hospital and cardiologist were out of network.

The Huffington Post reported that the family was infuriated by the ordeal considering they had been seeing the doctor and because they were referred to them and the Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland by their insurance provider. The report continued on to report Johan Schilling telling Fox40 about the situation: “It’s infuriating… the fact that they would make a dollar decision about my daughter’s care.”

When the Schilling’s tried to appeal the insurance company’s decision, they were denied. The family’s next move was to their case to California’s Department of Managed Health Care. The Schilling family has been keeping the public up to date on Aria’s battle, and as of Friday, November 1st, the family announced via the Facebook page Team Aria, that little Aria will receive her heart surgery after all.
