Texas Man Arrested For Overdue Libary Book

Jory Enck, a library patron in Copperas Cove, Texas, was arrested last week after he failed to return a library book. The arrest was part of the cities attempt to crack down on delinquent readers who long overdue books.

City municipal judge Bill Price explains why someone in the area can be arrested for such a simple violation. “The reason they passed it was that they were spending a tremendous amount of money replacing these materials that people just didn’t return,” Price reveals.

Last week police knocked on the door of Jory Enck and served him with a three-year-old warrant for not returning library materials.

Enck had checked out a G.E.D. study guide and forgot to return the book.

After going in front of the city municipal judge Enck was released on $200 bond. Shortly after his release, and likely embarrassed by the strangest rap sheet of all time, Enck returned the study guide to the public library.

While being arrested for not returning a library book might seem silly, keep in mind that a study guide could cost upwards of $25 to $100 to acquire. By not returning the item Jory Ench was participating in a form of theft, albeit an unintentional theft.

I felt a little dirty filing this story under “crime” but when all is said and done the book was returned and a $200 bond was paid. No harm, no foul.

With that being said, I now provide you with probably the saddest mugshot of all-time:

Do you think it was excessive to arrest a man because of a library book warrant from three-years ago?
