Ewan McGregor To Make Broadway Debut In ‘The Real Thing’

Ewan McGregor will make his Broadway debut in a revival of Tom Stoppard’s Tony-winning 1982 play The Real Thing.

McGregor will play Henry, an unhappily married playwright who is in love with the activist wife of one of his stars.

The Real Thing is produced by Roundabout Theatre Company and will begin previews at the American Airlines Theatre on October 2, 2014, with an official opening on October 30. The show will run through January 4, 2015. So far, Ewan McGregor is the only actor announced for the play; the remaining roles will be announced at a later date.

The Real Thing first premiered November 16, 1982 at London’s The Strand Theatre (now the Novello Theatre). Felicity Kendal created the role of Annie and Roger Rees created the role of Henry. Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons played Annie and Henry in the 1983 Broadway production at the Plymouth Theatre, and both won Tonys for the roles. Christine Baranksi, who played Henry’s wife Charlotte, also won a Tony for her role.

With the recent announcement of Star Wars: Episode VII, it was rumored that Ewan McGregor would reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, the Scottish actor revealed last month that he hadn’t been approached to star in the JJ Abrams-directed sequel.

“They haven’t phoned me yet,” McGregor said during the premiere of his film August: Osage County at the Toronto International Film Festival. “I’d be up for it [if they ask].”

Back in February, the 42-year-old said he would be interested in an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff. Disney had announced that a series of films set in the Star Wars universe would be produced separately from the new trilogy, and it was reported that those films could revolve around Han Solo, Yoda, and Boba Fett.

Ewan McGregor recently wrapped shooting on Jane Got a Gun, starring Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton. He is currently filming Mortdecai opposite Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow. His next film, August: Osage County, which also stars Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, opens December 25.
