Drug Tunnel Between Tijuana And San Diego Held ‘Tons Of Drugs’

A drug tunnel that was discovered connecting Tijuana and San Diego is now being said to have held a “ton of drugs.” The Inquisitr reported early Friday morning that a major drug tunnel was found on the US-Mexico border and reported that it was only recently finished.

According to ABC News the tunnel was shut down on Wednesday and links warehouses in San Diego’s Otay Mesa industrial park and Tijuana. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lauren Mack told ABCNews.com that the tunnel “is equipped with electricity, ventilation and a rail system.”

The report continued on to say that authorities found more than eight tons of pot as well as 325 pounds of cocaine. Mack reported that this is not only the latest drug tunnel to be shut down in the area, but is also the “first time cocaine has been recovered in connection with a local drug tunnel.”

The drug tunnel was discovered by San Diego Tunnel Task Force, which ABC News says consist of investigators from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration, Customs and Homeland Security. The Inquisitr reported that more than 75 tunnels have been discovered along the US-Mexico border since 2008.

CNN reported that the drug tunnel had yet to be used. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said late Wednesday “We were able to shutter it before it was utilized to bring drugs into the interior.”

The report also stated that this latest tunnel resembles that of a 600-yard tunnel discovered along the border in November 2010, that also had lighting and a rail system. Experts say that drug cartels on the border have become so powerful and sophisticated in recent years that many Mexican communities and areas along the border are patches of uncontrollable violence.

Drugs are an ever present problem in the US, and authorities have said they are doing whatever they can to protect the boarders from drug smugglers who use means such as drug tunnels to get drugs back and forth over the US-Mexican boarder.
