NC Republican Don Yelton Admits Voter ID Laws Intend To Suppress Vote

North Carolina Republican Don Yelton was stunningly honest about the true intent of voter ID laws in his state and many others during a Daily Show appearance last night — confirming the claims of opponents who say the laws are actually a bid to suppress voters.

GOP executive committee member Don Yelton dispensed with the common yarn that the voter ID push is because of genuine “voter fraud,” a circumstance that is quite rare but often alleged after the stunning Republican losses in 2012.

Many Republicans say restrictions such as ones recently passed in Texas barring many married women from voting are enacted to ensure fraud at the polls is rooted out. But Yelton admits that the measures are actually conceived to weight the vote unfairly.

Yelton sat down with TDS‘ Aasif Mandvi to talk about voter suppression in North Carolina, bizarrely even countering Mandvi’s assertion that Yelton isn’t a racist with an admission he has been “called a bigot.” The interview only gets more unbelievable from there, with Yelton claiming a racially controversial Obamacare witch doctor picture posted to his Facebook page only mocked Obama’s “white half.”

Gawker summarizes the pre-voter ID segment with a series of questionable admissions from the GOP exec, explaining:

“Yelton attempted to explain away the charges of racism — always a good idea — by: 1. Insisting that one of his best friends is black; 2. claiming that the photo of Obama dressed as a witch doctor that he shared on his Facebook page was making fun of his ‘white half;’ recalling how, when he was young, black people were called ‘negras;’ and bemoaning the fact that black people can use the word ‘n*gger’ but he can’t.”

Mandvi responds:

“You know that we can hear you, right?”

Voters in North Carolina are not pleased with the comments made by the GOP representative, and one comments on a local piece about the admissions of voter suppression and calling for further query:

“The paper should be doing a hard news story about the racist statements made by Don [Yelton.] Does he stand by these statements? If so, what he said is very serious and merits serious news coverage.”

Another says:

“At last, someone with the GOP has admitted the new voting restrictions are NOT about fraud, but suppressing the Democratic vote. Thank you, Mr. Yelton for finally telling the truth.”

Finally, Don Yelton says that the voter fraud outrage is ginned up to “kick Democrats in the butt,” adding that if the laws “hurt a bunch of lazy blacks, so be it.” Watch the stunning admissions, above.
