Cher Says Judy Garland Has ‘Got Nothing On Me’

No one can fault Cher for being vocal about her own confidence. Cher has been around for decades and for many years has been hailed as the Queen for inventing outlandish styles that have been reinvented generation after generation. Now, Cher is standing her ground and insisting that Judy Garland has got nothing on her.

Cher attended Attitude Magazine’s annual awards in London where she was being honored as this year’s Legend with her own Legend Award. During her acceptance speech, Cher compared herself to someone else who was also a legend, Ms. Judy Garland.

Addressing her gay fan base, Cher noted:

“I think what you guys like is a strong woman who’s having a breakdown constantly. And that certainly is me. Judy Garland’s got nothing on me.”

Judy Garland is of course known for her roles in many films including The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Easter Parade. Unfortunately, she was also known for her lifelong addiction, which lead to the end of her career, and a long. heavily documented downward spiral that eventually caused her death in 1969.

Cher continued with a few anecdotes for her crowd of mostly gay men during her acceptance speech:

“I was nine years old and my mother had these two friends that came over, and the first time I saw them—they were hairdressers, of course—but the first time I saw them, they came cha-chaing into our front door… In the beginning, I actually thought that gay was code for fun.”

Although Cher did throw some major shade at Judy Garland, she definitely knows her audience, saying:

“Gay men especially, they either love you or they don’t even notice that you’re on the planet.”

Cher is currently promoting her 25th studio album out called Closer to the Truth.
